Call for application for the position of SPDR for FY2026
Deadline: April 3th, 2025
RECRUIT
The involvement of creative young scientists is critical in pioneering new frontiers of science and technology. RIKEN’s Special Postdoctoral Researcher Program is a program to foster the development of researchers who will become internationally active in the future, and provides creative young scientists with the opportunity to be involved in autonomous and independent research on a topic of their own choosing that is in line with RIKEN objectives and research fields. The more details are Here
Qualifications:
Applicants must fulfill all five conditions given below:
- Be prepared to independently and responsibly pursue a research topic.
- 2.Have a PhD awarded on or after January 1, 2020, or expect to be awarded a PhD by the date of hire.
Note: Those with PhDs acquired prior to December 31, 2019, may also apply if there was a lapse in their research activity after obtaining the PhD, and if subtracting this period of non-research activity will allow them an equivalency that meets the above requirement. If applicable, please fill the details (specific reasons and period) in the application form.
RIKEN’s screening committee will determine whether the period of lapse is justifiable after the deadline for submitting the application.
Examples of acceptable periods of lapse: maternity leave, childcare leave, and working in private industry in a non-research capacity. - 3.Able to start work in FY 2026 (April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027)
- 4.Those who have previously participated in the SPDR and FPR programs are NOT eligible to apply.

Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher: 1 position
Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less.
Job description
By fostering collaboration among multiple laboratories specializing in organoid research, we aim to advance the development of mini-organs with complex morphologies from stem cells and the construction of integrated biological systems. In partnership with various research groups, researchers will tackle the following key challenges:
- 1.Formation of complex organoids by mimicking developmental environments in vitro
- 2.Construction of novel in vitro models for connecting different organoids
- 3.Maturation of organoids through vascular induction
The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.
Associated Laboratories
- Human Biomimetic System RIKEN Hakubi Research Team, Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (Laboratory head: Masaya Hagiwara)
- Laboratory for Lung Development and Regeneration, Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (Laboratory head: Mitsuru Morimoto)
- Laboratory for Human Organogenesis, Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (Laboratory head: Minoru Takasato)
Human Biomimetic System RIKEN Hakubi Research Team aims to reconstruct the original morphology and functions of organs by guiding the autonomous self-organization of cells through the control of the culture environment—such as cell population shapes, ECM localization, and concentration gradients of morphogens—to mimic the in vivo environment.
Laboratory for Lung Development and Regeneration conducts research on the generation of lung organoids from pluripotent and tissue stem cells, tissue repair and regeneration phenomena in adult lungs, and the mechanisms underlying respiratory diseases.
Laboratory for Human Organogenesis focuses on creating organoids of primarily urological organs (kidneys, ureters, and bladders) from human ES/iPS cells and is working toward their maturation, functionalization, and integration.
We welcome informal inquiries and laboratory visits prior to application.

Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher: 1 position
Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less.
Job description
Research related to the organoid development such as lung, spinal chord, and kidney and control organoid architecture by providing spatial information to the cells. It is essential to design the suitable culture conditions based on development in vivo, reconstitute environment with engineering technologies to give orientation, and analyze the cellular composition and functions of developed organoids.
Qualification
Those with a Ph.D. degree in a field broadly related to the "job description" and who can communicate smoothly and cooperatively with collaborators inside and outside the laboratory.
